Laundry Day Bliss: How Proper Washer & Dryer Maintenance Make A Difference

Did you know that the cleanliness of your clothes and linens relies on more than just laundry detergent and fabric softener? Your washing machines and dryers require maintenance to create fresh-smelling laundry. Whether you have a front-loading or a top-loading washing machine, you need to know how to maintain your appliances for clean laundry:

Leave the Washing Machine Door Open

Perhaps the easiest thing you can do to maintain your washing machine is to leave the lid open after a wash cycle. This allows your laundry appliances to dry thoroughly and minimizes the likelihood of mould and mildew growth on the interior. Without following this one simple step, you may unknowingly seal in moisture between washes.

Additionally, you should try to empty your washing machine as soon after the load finishes as possible.

Regular Washing Machine Cleaning

Even though you add detergent to your clothes when you run a washing cycle, you still need to take a few preventive measures when it comes to your washer maintenance. Don’t add too much detergent in an attempt to get it clean. Instead, you should wash it with a bleach solution, allowing it to soak before rinsing the drum clean.

If you need more regular cleaning of your top or front-load washers, you can do something similar with three to four cups of vinegar on a wash cycle.

Other helpful tips include wiping down the washer door, the seals, and any parts of the machine that might not have been cleansed with the vinegar solution. Don’t scrub too hard and damage the moving pieces, but use vinegar to eliminate any mould and mildew.

Clean Your Lint Trap and Dryer Vent

It likely comes as no surprise that your dryer vent and lint trap can both become clogged with the loose fibres from your clothes, towels, and blankets. Unfortunately, this is one of the leading causes of house fires. With a little mindfulness, you can reduce your risk of disaster and keep your dryer working more efficiently.

The lint filter should be cleaned after each use of the dryer, especially if you are using dryer sheets or fabric softeners that increase lint. The dryer vent requires a little more planning and muscle, but taking it apart and removing build-up is essential.

Keep in mind that you may need to clean the lint screen with a toothbrush occasionally, even if you use a natural fabric softener; it can acquire buildup that makes it hard to function properly.
